Dear STRADIGMA Readers,
Emerging dynamics and radical changes in
international relations with the end of the
Cold War have paved the way for substantial
vacuums and spheres of conflict. Turkey, as
a strong and stabile country at the center
of these vacuums and conflicts, has been trying
to grasp these new dynamics, adapt to them
and exert influence. However, it is seen that
Turkey has not been able to clearly define
its strategic pursuits as yet.
As a consequence of important developments,
conflicts and wars taking place within its
historical and strategic sphere of influence,
Turkey has been rightfully struggling to activate
new concepts in domestic and foreign politics.
There is a great deal of speculation that
the war on Iraq which broke out just adjacent
to our country will be the major development
in reshaping the world and the Middle East,
West Asia and Transcaucasia in particular.
Third issue of STRADIGMA.COM that
came out in April has included a general overview
of the war in Iraq -as our second issue has
dealt with the war extensively- and perspectives
on the causes of migration to our country
which is at the crossroads of crisis zones,
an assessment revisiting the reasons behind
Iraqi civil resistance within the context
of the Palestinian case, Turkish-Greek relations
and the issue of Cyprus on which no solution
satisfactory to parties is ever produced,
concessions are regularly imposed on Turkey
and which is made into an obstacle to us on
the path to EU, the so-called Armenian problem
which is being systematically brought before
Turkey for years and facts about Armenian
lies, and missionary activities aimed at our
country.
We are witnessing the appearance of cracks
in the post-World War II international system
and signs that we are moving toward a transformation.
Through STRADIGMA.COM, we are trying to present
you expert analysis for the future on how
to best protect Turkey's national interests
in this new world order that will come forth.
In our fourth issue in May 2003, we wish
to concentrate on Turkish-American relations
that are facing ups and downs recently, the
latest developments on the Iraq war and research
on our region, on Europe and European Union
and Turkish-EU relations and on prospective
developments should the Greek Cypriot Administration
and the EU conclude the membership treaty.
We will always be pleased to offer you research,
analysis and assessment, which will contribute
to the strategic pursuits of our country and
to building a powerful Turkey.
Best Regards,
Yüksel SAMAST
